Very rare video taken at Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya City, Japan on July 10, 2010. This is a very early stage of making Japanese sword, tempering the hot chunk of pure iron called “Tamahagane” in Japanese. Ever watchied Princess Mononoke? The village that appeared in that movie was the kind of place where Tamahagane was made. It will eventually be about 70 cm (2 ft. 3in.) Japanese sword and be dedicated tentatively to Atsuta Shrine on July 12, 2010. The official dedication of the sword will be performed on November, 2010 after polishing and making the sword’s sheath. At the half of this video you can see the hot iron chunk being bent and folded into half! This was their 13th annual performance, and it is associated with “Kusanagi no Tsurugi” (草薙の剣) that is dedicated at Atsuta Shrine and which is one of the Three Sacred Treasures of the Imperial Family (三種の神器). The purpose of the perfomance is to reserve and succeed the precious Japanese tradition and techniques.
